Research guidance, not a substitute for the source

Content is provided to help locate and evaluate genealogy sources. Dates and counts describe the cited collection at the verification date and may change. The site does not guarantee completeness, availability, accuracy of third-party indexing or a particular research result.

You may quote short passages with a link to the relevant page. Dataset facts should be cited with the visible source URL and verification date. Generated pages, design, illustrations and original explanatory writing remain subject to applicable copyright law.

Responsible use

Do not use the site to harass, identify or profile living people. Respect repository terms, image licences, data-protection rules and any restrictions attached to the original material. External organisations control their own catalogues, subscriptions, opening hours and copying services.

Corrections

Source-backed corrections are welcome. A link does not imply endorsement, affiliation or responsibility for an external service. These terms are governed by the laws applicable in England and Wales and were reviewed 29 July 2026.

Availability and changes

The guide may correct, expand or remove material when sources change, a claim cannot be reproduced or a repository requests an appropriate amendment. Stable URLs and redirects are maintained where practical, but uninterrupted availability is not guaranteed. Users should preserve their own research notes and cite the source owner as well as this guide.

Automated extraction must respect technical access controls and must not be used to reconstruct prohibited person indexes from the site's explanatory pages. Nothing here grants rights in third-party catalogues, images or records. If a term conflicts with a repository's current access or copying conditions, the repository's conditions govern use of its material.

The explanatory text is not legal, archival or professional research advice. Researchers remain responsible for evaluating the evidence, observing closure periods and obtaining permission for any reuse beyond the allowances of the relevant source owner.
