A county guide organised around evidence
Hertfordshire Genealogy helps researchers identify a historic place, choose an appropriate record series and reach the catalogue or institution that can provide fuller evidence. It is not a biographical database. The site contains no automatically assembled profiles of people, no copied lists of names from sources and no public form that produces surname-result pages.
The core parish dataset reports baptism, marriage and burial coverage separately because the date ranges do not always match. The values come from a cited platform collection list and are labelled as online coverage, not complete survival. Collection-level archive statements come from Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies. When a precise catalogue reference has not been checked, the field says “not confirmed”.
What a page can and cannot tell you
A parish page can show that an indexed collection describes a series over a given span, connect the place with a historic hundred where a cited Victoria County History page supports that relationship, and suggest record types that may answer a question. It cannot prove that a particular entry exists or that two similar observations concern the same person.
The guide uses English (UK), stable trailing-slash URLs and visible source links. Its canonical web address is https://hertfordshiregenealogy.co.uk/. Pages belonging to this publication use that non-hyphenated domain. Pages are reviewed as structured facts change or when a verifiable correction is received.
Editorial scope in practice
Each page answers a source-finding question: what kind of record may help, what coverage has been verified, which institution or platform describes it, and what the researcher should check next. This keeps the site useful without republishing archive material. Search results, record images, certificates and original volumes remain with their custodians and are subject to those organisations' access and reuse terms.
Pages are published by Hertfordshire Genealogy. No named contributor is shown unless their identity and role can be verified; none is currently claimed. The publication is an editorial source guide, not Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies, Hertfordshire County Council, Findmypast or an archive catalogue. External links do not imply affiliation.
Corrections are accepted when another editor can reproduce the evidence from a catalogue or institutional page. Unverified local tradition, inferred family relationships and plausible-looking dates are excluded until a suitable source is supplied.
