Use electoral registers

Account for franchise rules, missing years and changing addresses. This workflow is designed for Hertfordshire research but the evidence principles are general: define a narrow question, separate observations from inference and keep a reproducible source trail.

Step 1: define one research question

Write a question that can be answered by evidence within a place and period. List what is already known, where each observation came from and which element remains uncertain. Avoid beginning with an assumed relationship.

Step 2: resolve place and jurisdiction

Identify the historic parish, registration district, poor-law union, probate court or other jurisdiction relevant at the date. Modern boundaries are a useful access clue but can misdirect historic research around Barnet, Potters Bar, Kensworth and other transferred areas.

Step 3: choose the record series

Use the linked Electoral registers and poll books guide to understand the source’s purpose and limits. Check coverage before searching. A start and end year can contain gaps and does not establish that every event was recorded.

Step 4: search the catalogue or index

Begin with the source owner’s catalogue where possible. Browse collection hierarchy, retain the reference and treat platform indexes as locators. Vary place labels and observed spellings without silently changing the evidence.

Step 5: inspect and compare

Read the fullest available item, including headings, marginal notes and adjacent context. Compare the observation with an independent source. Agreement strengthens a conclusion only when the sources are not copies of the same underlying statement.

Step 6: cite the result and uncertainty

Record repository, collection, reference, item, page or folio, access method and date. Write what the source states, then a separate interpretation. Keep negative searches and unresolved conflicts in the log so another researcher can reproduce the route.

Completion means a documented conclusion with stated limits, not the removal of every uncertainty.
